Where it goes wrong:
- Pitch is guessed, not measured, and ends up below the manufacturer’s minimum.
- Headlaps are reduced to “save tiles” or because the battens were set out badly.
- No thought is given to extra protection in valleys, around chimneys or along parapet walls.
My honest advice: if you’re in the band between about 18–22.5° and you like the look of interlocking tiles, they can be a sensible choice, but only if the pitch is properly measured and the fixing guide is followed, not “eyeballed”.
2. Traditional Plain Tiles (Concrete or Clay)
Where they work: Typically 35° and upwards. On paper you’ll sometimes see 30°, but I don’t like plain tiles anywhere near low pitch.
Plain tiles rely heavily on overlap and gravity. Drop the pitch too far and you basically create a water trap. I’ve been called to plenty of extensions where someone loved the look of plain tiles and insisted on them at 20° – those jobs almost always end up with leaks or constant repairs.

Pros:
- Lighter weight than full tiles.
- Fewer joints for water to creep through.
Cons I actually see on jobs:
- Noise in wind and heavy rain if not installed properly.
- Condensation issues if the build-up underneath isn’t right.
- Harder to match visually with traditional Sussex roofs.
They have their place, but I only suggest them when they genuinely suit the property and the homeowner understands the trade-offs.
