How I Actually Plan a Gutter Installation (Not Just “Stick It to the Fascia”)
When customers ask me about gutters and installation, most expect a quick answer about what size or colour to pick. In my 18 years on the roof, I’ve learned that good guttering is less about the product and more about planning the whole water route from roof tile to drain. If you get that wrong, the best gutter in the world will still overflow and soak your walls.
In this guide I’m not going to repeat the usual “replace broken gutters” advice or talk about basic costs – I cover that in other parts of my site. Here I want to walk you through how I actually think about your gutter installation: how I match it to your roof, your house layout, and the way rain really behaves in Brighton, Hove and along the Sussex coast.
Step 1: Matching Your Gutters to Your Roof Shape and Pitch
If you ask me, I’ll tell you straight: the roof decides what gutter system you need, not the brochure. Before I even touch a tape measure, I look at three things:
- The roof pitch (how steep it is)
- The total area feeding into each run of gutter
- Where the water naturally wants to go
A small, shallow porch roof can get away with a narrow gutter. A steep, modern tile roof on a terraced house can throw water off like a waterfall – in that case I’ll usually recommend a deeper or higher-capacity profile and more downpipes.
On many older terraced roofs in Brighton, the front and rear pitches are quite steep, and the original gutters simply aren’t sized for the sudden heavy showers we get now. I see this a lot when I’m replacing roofs – the tiles are new, but the gutters are still working to 1950s rainfall assumptions.
Why the “One Long Gutter, One Downpipe” Setup Fails
The classic mistake I see is one long continuous gutter with a single downpipe at one end. It looks tidy, but it’s a problem when:
- There’s a large roof area feeding into that run
- You’ve got a south- or west-facing slope catching driving rain
- You live in a terrace where the gutter is shared or very long
In heavy rain, water can’t move fast enough along the gutter and it simply sheets over the front, soaking brickwork and window heads. When I install new gutters, I often break long runs into two sections and add an extra downpipe, even if it means more work for me. It’s the only way to get the flow right.
Step 2: Planning Fall, Levels and Bracket Positions
Most people think gutters are level. They aren’t – or at least, they shouldn’t be. A big part of a proper installation is setting the fall (the gentle slope) towards the outlet. Get this wrong by even a few millimetres and you’ll end up with standing water or constant drips.
How I Set the Correct Fall
On a typical semi or terrace, I start by choosing the outlet position, then I work backwards:
- I mark the bracket level at the outlet end
- I stretch a string line to the high end of the run
- I build in a drop of around 2–3mm per metre towards the outlet
That doesn’t sound like much, but over a 10m run that’s 20–30mm, which is enough to keep water moving without the gutter looking visibly sloped from the ground.
Bracket Spacing: Where Many DIY Installs Go Wrong
In my experience, most sagging gutters I get called out to look at have two simple problems:
- Brackets spaced too far apart
- Brackets fixed into soft, rotten fascia or poor masonry
I generally keep brackets at 600mm centres as a maximum, and closer on corners or near downpipes where weight builds up. If I’m working on exposed seafront properties in Hove or Worthing, I sometimes tighten that spacing even more. Strong wind plus a gutter full of water is a lot of force on a small screw.
Step 3: Choosing Gutter Types Based on How You Live, Not Just How It Looks
When customers ask me which gutter type is “best”, my honest answer is: it depends on the house and on you. Appearance matters, but so does how much maintenance you’re realistically going to do.
Half-Round vs Deepflow vs Square
- Half-round gutters – Common, simple, work fine on smaller or average roofs. Easy to clean, forgiving on alignment.
- Deepflow / high-capacity gutters – My go-to choice for steep roofs or large extensions where a lot of water is running into a short section.
- Square gutters – Slightly more capacity than standard half-round and a more modern look on newer builds.
If you’ve got a flat roof rear extension feeding into a short run of gutter, I often match that with a higher-capacity system. I see this a lot when I’m working on flat roof extensions in Brighton – the roof area is big, but the space for the gutter is small.
Material Choices: What I Recommend in Sussex
- uPVC – What I install most often. Cost-effective, plenty of colours, and fine in our coastal climate if fixed properly.
- Aluminium – Nice for period or high-end properties, tougher than plastic, good where ladders and maintenance are frequent.
- Cast iron – Looks right on some Victorian terraces and listed buildings, but needs more maintenance and careful installation.
In salty air near the seafront, the quality of the fixings matters just as much as the gutter material. I always use decent screws and fixings, not whatever’s cheapest from a mixed box.
Step 4: Thinking About Where the Water Ends Up (Not Just Getting It Off the Roof)
A lot of gutter installations stop thinking at the downpipe, and that’s where damp problems start. When I’m planning your gutters, I always look at:
- Where each downpipe discharges
- Whether there’s a proper gully or soakaway
- If any sections splash directly against brickwork or into flower beds
On some properties I see downpipes dropping straight onto a narrow path beside the wall, with no proper drain. The water then bounces back onto the brickwork and weeps into the internal plaster.
When I Suggest Moving or Adding a Downpipe
Moving a downpipe isn’t something most people think of, but sometimes it’s the most effective damp solution you can do without touching the roof itself. I might recommend a new downpipe when:
- One gully is overwhelmed while another corner of the house has none
- A short side roof throws all its water onto the neighbour’s wall
- A flat roof above a bay window constantly overflows
On bay windows in particular, the combination of a small flat roof and a tiny gutter can be tricky. When I’m repairing bay window roofs, I always review the gutter and outlet position at the same time – fixing one without checking the other is only half a job.
Flat Roofs and Gutters: Getting the Edge Detail Right
Flat roofs don’t behave like pitched roofs when it comes to water. Instead of a quick run-off, you get ponding and slow movement. That means the junction between the flat roof and the gutter is absolutely critical.
Common Flat Roof Gutter Problems I See
- Water sitting at the edge because the roof wasn’t laid to falls
- Felt or single-ply membranes dropping into the gutter and blocking flow
- Timber drip edges set too low, causing water to back up under the covering
When I put in a new flat roof in Brighton or Hove, I always think about the gutter as part of the system. That might mean fitting a proper drip trim into the gutter, adding a box gutter, or re-aligning an existing plastic gutter to match the new roof falls.
Gutters on Small Roofs: Porches, Bays and Dormers
Smaller roofs – porches, bays, dormers – can cause big problems because their guttering is often an afterthought. In my experience, leaks over front doors and bay windows are nearly always linked to undersized or poorly installed gutters on these small roofs.
Porch and Bay Roof Gutters
On porch roofs and bays, space for gutters is tight. I often need to use:
- Compact but higher-capacity profiles
- Clever outlet positioning to avoid doors and windows
- Careful bracket spacing because people lean ladders there
It’s also an area where poorly aligned downpipes can make doorstep puddles and slippery algae patches. When I install gutters on small roofs, I plan how you actually use that entrance, not just how it looks from the road.
Dormer Gutters
Dormers often sit partway down a pitched roof, so they get water from above as well as from their own little flat roof. When I’m working on a dormer flat roof, I pay extra attention to:
- How the main roof drains around the dormer
- Whether valley gutters are correctly sized and kept clear
- How the dormer gutter ties back into the main system
Get that junction wrong and you end up with water constantly dumping onto one small piece of gutter, which will eventually overflow into the dormer cheeks or down the rear wall.
Installation Details That Make a Big Difference Over 10–15 Years
From the ground, all new gutters look similar on day one. The difference between a rushed job and a careful installation only shows after a few winters. Here are the details I always pay attention to.
Expansion and Jointing
uPVC expands and contracts with temperature. In my 18 years on the roof, I’ve noticed that many cracked or leaking joints are simply down to ignoring the manufacturer’s expansion marks. When I install, I always:
- Leave the correct expansion gap in each joint
- Use the right number of clips, fully engaged
- Seat rubber gaskets properly and keep them clean of grit while assembling
That extra two minutes at each joint means fewer callbacks and a much longer service life for you.
Fixing into Something Solid
If the fascia is rotten or loose, I’ll be honest with you – I’ll recommend sorting that first. There’s no point hanging a brand-new gutter on timber that moves every time the wind picks up. How I Check a New Gutter Installation Before I Leave
I don’t just fit it and drive off. Before I pack up, I always:
- Sight down the gutter from each end to check for unintended dips
- Pour water from a hose or bucket into problem-prone areas and watch how it flows
- Check joints from a ladder while water is running, not just dry
- Make sure downpipes are firmly clipped and not rattling against the wall
